On 21 July 1976 Sri Chinmoy first played the Indian flute in Reykjavik, Iceland. Sri Chinmoy first learnt to play a straight bamboo flute.
Later he became fond of the side-flute or as Sri Chinmoy referred to it “My Golden Flute.”
The Indian flute and also the western flute were frequently played at most major peace concerts.

A Fourteen Hour Peace Concert
On Saturday, 25 November 1995, Sri Chinmoy played 150 musical instruments from around the world, at Public School 117 in Briarwood, New York. The Peace Concert was entitled "A Fourteen Hour Peace Concert: Immensity-Peace-Sea-Experiences. Sublimity-Peace-Sky-Realisations".

Buying Flutes
Sri Chinmoy shares a lighthearted story of buying an Indian flute, whilst shopping in India.
“Whenever I see an Indian flute, I always like to play it. In a store in Delhi I was playing a wooden flute. The price was ten rupees. In India I always offer them half the price, so I said, ‘Five rupees.' ”

Western Flute
Earlier in the year, on 10 March 1976, Sri Chinmoy first learnt to play the Western flute on a bus journey to Healesville Sanctuary on the outskirts of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
