The first annual Sri Chinmoy 3100 Mile Race (12 June-1 August) concludes outside Thomas Edison Vocational High School in Jamaica, NY, USA. The race was conducted on a certified .5488 mile loop (883.2079 metres) on a paved sidewalk surrounding the school. With a 51-day cut-off, only two out of the five starters, completed the 3,100 miles — Edward Kelley (1st man) in 47 days + 15:19:56, and Suprabha Beckjord (1st woman) in 50 days + 02:09:56. And, two others — Georgs Jermolajevs and Aleksandar Arsic —finished 2700 miles.

As a young child, Madal (Chinmoy) is brought to the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry, India, by his parents for the first time for a short visit. At just under 2 years of age, he travels with his family on the four-day steam train journey from Chittagong in East Bengal. The family undertakes three more round trips to the Ashram in 1936, 1939 and 1941 – each time covering the arduous, 5,000-km journey – before all children finally become permanent members of the Ashram after both parents pass away in 1944.
