The concert of music and meditation, offered for the African-American community free of charge by spiritual teacher Sri Chinmoy, drew a standing-room-only crowd.

Sri Chinmoy’s combination of haunting spiritual music, punctuated by periods of silent meditation and deep communion with God, was received in reverential and pin-drop silence.

The 63-year-old New York-based spiritual teacher told the audience that he was “lovingly, devotedly and gratefully dedicating” his concert to Martin Luther King, whom he called “the immortal of immortals.”

Martin Luther King, Sri Chinmoy said,

“was at once the bravest child of Divinity and the dearest brother of humanity. He was at once the embodiment and revelation of a dream that sleeplessly and breathlessly cried for the manifestation of a oneness heart here in America. He was indeed a hero-supreme of this earth planet.”

At the end of the concert, Sri Chinmoy invited his African-American students to join him on the stage for a few moments of silent meditation and self-offering.

“We’re following up this concert with a series of meditation workshops aimed at providing a positive and dynamic way of approaching our own strengths and challenges as African-Americans,” said Bhashwar Hart, one of the concert organizers.
